Overview

Few properties in Tuscany are as immaculately tended, or produce such meticulously made wines, as Fontodi. A new cellar was installed for the 1998 vintage. Sorbo is made with fruit grown in the Vigna del Sorbo vineyard. The vines are 25 years old, and the vineyard is situated at an altitude of 400 metres above sea level and faces south/south-west. 10% of the blend is Cabernet Sauvignon.

Grape Variety
90% Sangiovese and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon.
Vinification
Varieties were fermented separately in s s tanks for 18 days. During fermentation and maceration the cap is submerged 2 x per day. Racked into oak.
Aging
Malo fermentation in barriques, 18 mos in oak + 6 in bottle.

Deep ruby red.

Intense on the nose showing red berry with black fruit and spice.

Ripe tannins, giving backbone to the powerful fruit character. Great length and power.

The 2001 Chianti Classico Riserva Vigna del Sorbo is a deeply-flavored effort, with layers of black cherries, minerals and sweet toasted oak that flow from the glass in a stunning expression of contemporary Chianti. With air lovely balsamic notes appear, completing this magnificent, elegant wine, which should provide highly pleasurable drinking to age 20.

Needs air to coax out the superrich vein of black cherry and ripe plum fruit, with hints of fresh earth and herbs. Full-bodied, with a supersilky texture that firms up the finish. There's lots of new oak, but this is well-constructed. Drink now. 2,500 cases made.
