Overview
Since the 2007 harvest, FONTARCA white has been made with 100% Viognier grapes from vines originally planted in 1991 with a per hectare density of 7000 plants, and more recently (in 2005) with a per hectare density of 8500. The vineyards are located on land belonging to the winery at an altitude ranging from 290 to 300 metres a.s.l. For the 2007 vintage, we chose to significantly reduce the number of bottles produced (from a 15-thousand-bottle average per vintage to just 7000). The reason behind this decision was a desire to wholly identify the wine with the Viognier grape, moving away from the winery's tradition of using significant amounts of Chardonnay, with a view to making a clean break with a more international model in favour of fully embracing a vine especially well acclimatised in the Cortona area.
