Braida di Bologna
Piemonte
By the early 1980's Giacomo Bologna had influenced the way Barbera wines were being produced in the Asti and Alba zones. His efforts literally ran a parallel with the evolution of the Super Tuscan wines. The locals thought him to be crazy after he drastically reduced yields and started to use French oak barriques to make his famous Bricco dell'Uccellone. Giacomo left this world too soon. Today the Braida tradition is being carried on by his wife and two children. Anna, Raffaella and Beppe Bologna make some of the most highly regarded Barberas in Italy at their ultramodern facility near Asti. These are big, bold and silky Barberas at their finest.
